Almost every week now, someone messages us on WhatsApp with the same story. They bought a Walmart e-gift card from a vendor on Telegram, usually at a price that seemed like a blessing. A $1,000 card for a fraction of what it should cost. The screenshots looked convincing: a Walmart logo, a card number, a barcode, even an order confirmation page that appeared to come from walmart.com. Then they try to sell it, and the balance check comes back empty. Not low. Empty. The card never existed.
We verify every card that comes through Gift Card Coach, which means we see these fakes daily, and the volume has grown sharply. Walmart is one of the most traded gift card brands in Nigeria, and that popularity has made it the favourite costume for a wave of counterfeit e-gift cards that have no balance, no history with Walmart, and no market value anywhere.
This guide shows you exactly what these fakes look like, how a genuine Walmart gift card is structured, where real cards actually come from, and why the fake ones can never be converted to naira no matter who claims otherwise.
The fake cards making the rounds
The counterfeits circulating right now follow a recognisable pattern. Some carry the name "Blueone Walmart" and display a face value of 1,000 USD with the word "Global" attached. Others come as screenshots of what looks like a Walmart order page, complete with a blue checkmark and the words "Online, Shipment success." Some arrive as printed slips styled like Walmart receipts, listing a "Placement Order" from platforms with names like "Livecardnet," along with instructions to sell or "trade" the card through a specific Telegram channel.
A few of them are careful enough to reuse pieces of real Walmart formatting, including barcode number sequences copied from genuine cards. That is what makes them dangerous. At a glance, on a cracked phone screen, in a hurry, they pass.
But every single one of them collapses under five seconds of informed scrutiny, because the people producing them keep making the same mistakes.
What a real Walmart gift card looks like
A real Walmart gift card, physical or digital, has a 16-digit card number made up of numbers only. No letters. Ever. Alongside it sits a 4-digit PIN. On a physical card the PIN hides under a scratch-off panel on the back. On a genuine eGift card, the card number and PIN are displayed together with a scannable barcode, delivered by email from Walmart itself or an authorised seller.
Real Walmart gift cards top out at $500. That is the maximum denomination Walmart issues.
There is no $1,000 Walmart gift card, and there has never been one.
Real Walmart gift cards are also US products for US redemption. They work at Walmart stores in the United States, on walmart.com, and at Sam's Club locations for Sam's Club members. There is no "Global" edition. A card advertising itself as "Walmart 1000 USD (Global)" has announced its own forgery twice in one line.
And real Walmart gift cards never expire, never charge fees, and are redeemed in exactly two places: at a register in a US Walmart or Sam's Club, or in the payment section of walmart.com, entered in the same field where a debit or credit card would go. That is the complete list.
Seven signs the Walmart gift card in front of you is fake
1. Letters in the card number. This is the fastest tell. We have seen fakes displaying codes like "XH58KSUR85PG142L" as the card number. Walmart card numbers are 16 digits, numeric only. One letter ends the conversation.

2. A face value above $500. The counterfeiters love $1,000 because a bigger number hooks harder. Walmart does not issue it.

3. The word "Global" or a strange brand name attached. "Blueone Walmart," "Walmart Global," or any similar hybrid is not a Walmart product. Walmart gift cards say Walmart and nothing else.

4. Any mention of Telegram. This one matters most. Several of the fakes literally print redemption or trading instructions pointing to Telegram channels. Read that sentence again. A retail gift card from an American supermarket chain that tells you to redeem it on Telegram. Walmart gift cards cannot be redeemed, checked, verified, or traded through any Telegram link, channel, or username. Any card, receipt, or vendor directing you to Telegram for "activation" or "verification" is running a script, and you are the target.

5. A hyphenated claim code. Some fakes display codes formatted like "XDSK-2DR5-K9P2." That format belongs to a different retailer's gift cards entirely. Walmart does not issue claim codes in that style. The forgers mixed up their costumes.
6. A receipt showing "USDT." One counterfeit receipt in circulation lists "1000 USDT Walmart (Global) gift card." USDT is a cryptocurrency, not US dollars. Walmart does not sell gift cards denominated in crypto. A receipt like this was assembled by someone hoping you would not look closely.

7. Broken English and invented rules. The fake slips carry phrases like "placement Order is now activated successfully and have 48/hr of value for security purposes before reactivate number is required." Real Walmart communications do not read like that, and no genuine gift card comes with a countdown, a reactivation requirement, or a rule that it can only be sold through one specific channel.
Why the receipt matters more than ever
With fakes this widespread, the purchase receipt has become the single strongest piece of evidence a genuine card carries. A real receipt shows where the card was bought, when, and for how much, from an identifiable retailer. It is also your lifeline if a card is ever lost or disputed, because Walmart customer service at 1-888-537-5503 can assist with registered cards or cards backed by an original receipt.
The fake ecosystem knows this, which is why counterfeit receipts now circulate alongside counterfeit cards. But the fake receipts fail the same tests the cards do: crypto denominations, impossible amounts, invented platform names, Telegram instructions. When we ask for a receipt at Gift Card Coach, we are not creating paperwork for its own sake. We are checking whether the card's origin story survives contact with reality.
Where genuine Walmart gift cards actually come from
There are only a few legitimate sources. Walmart itself sells physical cards in its US stores and eGift cards on walmart.com. Authorised US retailers sell physical Walmart cards on their racks. Established, reputable gift card platforms sell verified digital cards.
If you are in Nigeria, the genuine Walmart cards you encounter almost always arrive from someone in the US: a relative, a client, an employer, a rewards program. That chain of custody is normal and healthy.
What is not normal is a stranger on Telegram or WhatsApp selling "loaded" $1,000 Walmart cards at half price. There are only two possibilities behind an offer like that, and both end badly for you. Either the card is counterfeit and worth nothing, or it was obtained through fraud, in which case Walmart kills the balance the moment the theft is reported, and the person holding the card at that moment absorbs the loss. Cheap loaded cards are not a market opportunity. They are the bait.
One more tip that applies even to physical cards bought in the US: take cards from behind the counter rather than the open rack where possible. Rack tampering, where someone records card numbers and reseals the packaging, is a known scam, and a card can be drained the moment it is activated.

How to check a Walmart gift card balance, the official ways
There are exactly three, and none of them involve a messaging app. You can check online at walmart.com's gift card balance page using the 16-digit card number and 4-digit PIN. You can ask a cashier at any US Walmart store. Or you can call Walmart gift card customer service on 1-888-537-5503, the number printed on the back of genuine cards.
You can also save up to five gift cards inside a Walmart account through the app or website, which both stores the balance and creates a registration record that helps if the card is ever lost.
Anyone offering to "check your balance" through a Telegram username is not checking anything. They are collecting your card number and PIN, and if the card was real when you messaged them, it will not be real for long.
Why fake cards can never become naira
This is the part we most need Nigerian traders to understand, because it is where the loss actually lands.
A gift card has value for exactly one reason: a retailer somewhere is holding a balance against that card number and will honour it at checkout. Every naira paid for a Walmart gift card traces back to that single fact. When we buy a Walmart card, we can pay for it because the balance is real at Walmart and the card can be redeemed for goods worth that amount.
A fake card has no balance at Walmart. It never did. The number was invented, the screenshot was assembled, the receipt was decorated. When any legitimate vendor runs the balance check, it returns nothing, and nothing is what the card is worth. Not a discounted rate. Not a reduced payout. Nothing. No honest platform in Nigeria or anywhere else can pay for it, and the dishonest channels promising to "trade" these cards are the same operations that manufactured them.
This is why Gift Card Coach verifies every card before payment, and why we confirm your rate with you before anything changes hands. It protects you as much as us. The verification step is the entire difference between a market and a lottery.
Selling a genuine Walmart gift card in Nigeria
If your Walmart card is real, it is one of the most liquid cards you can hold. Walmart's popularity keeps demand steady, and genuine cards with clear photos and, ideally, a receipt move fast.
Rates change with demand, so always check the current Walmart rate on our rates page before trading. As an illustration only: at a rate of ₦1,200 per dollar, a genuine $100 Walmart gift card pays around ₦120,000 directly to your bank account. Your exact figure gets confirmed with you on WhatsApp before the trade proceeds, and payment lands within minutes of verification.
The process takes five minutes to hours depending on the ease of redemption. Check your balance using one of the three official methods above and screenshot the result. Photograph the card details clearly. Tap "Sell My Card," tell us the value and whether it is physical or digital, and send your proof. We verify, confirm your rate, redeem and pay.

Can I redeem or verify a Walmart gift card on Telegram?
No. Walmart gift cards can only be redeemed at US Walmart and Sam's Club stores or on walmart.com at checkout. Any card or vendor directing you to a Telegram channel for redemption, activation, or balance checks is a scam.

No. Walmart gift cards and eGift cards have no expiration date and no fees.
