Airbnb Gift Card

So, learning the hard way that if you can only pay with a gift card on the first payment for the reservation. I used a gift card and a credit card for a reservation that we ended up cancelling because we found something better. I cancelled the reservation and the gift card ended up being credited back into my account, but not immediately and we needed to secure the second place. We assumed we could just use the gift card on the second half of the payment. Even though I went in to select the changed payment method to include the gift cards for the last payment, they charged my credit card for the whole thing and the gift cards are sitting in my account. I was on the phone with customer service for over an hour trying to figure out why they didn't use those gift cards. Currently waiting for a supervisor to call me back, but it looks like I will just have to save them to use on another reservation.

Long story short, yes, you will get the gift cards credited to your account but don't expect to be able to use them on the second part of a reservation. They can only be used on the first payment of a reservation.
Here's a decent analogy that outlines my frustration here: if I go to a shoe store and purchase a new pair of shoes with a gift card but decide to return them, does that shoe store just take my gift card and say "too bad"? No, instead that store gives me a store credit or gift card so that I can purchase a different pair of shoes. I would actually like to rebook the exact same property I had previously booked later this month (and hope that there's not another once-in-a-century snow storm in Denver) but I'm waiting to do so because Airbnb is holding my $200 gift credit hostage. What's even crazier is that the service fees alone on the new rebooking would equal $170. Airbnb has already been paid the $200 when the gift card was purchased so they've made their money there. It seems absolutely outrageous to me that Airbnb is willing to risk all of my future business and hosting over a $30 difference. If I even book two more properties in my lifetime, Airbnb easily covers that difference.

Track your gift card balance in the Airbnb app

1. Tap Profile
2. Tap Account settings, and then tap Payments
3. Tap Credits and coupons, go to Gift credit to review the current credit balance
4. Tap Current balance for the list of gift cards applied to your account

When you book your stay or experience, the balance from any gift card funds on your account will be automatically applied. More good news: Once a gift card has been added to an Airbnb account, the gift card (claimed or unclaimed) won’t expire.
