Sometimes in store, almost never online, and the distinction is the whole answer. Decathlon has issued cards whose terms allow redemption in stores across a named list of countries, covering the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Monaco, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Spain.

Those same terms state expressly that the card is not applicable to any Decathlon website other than the issuing country's, so a UK card with cross-border store rights still only works online at decathlon.co.uk.

Other Decathlon cards are single-country in store as well as online, with standard UK terms limiting redemption to UK stores and decathlon.co.uk. Because both versions exist, check the terms that came with your specific card rather than assuming, and note that Decathlon's balance checker will send you to another country's website if the card was issued there.

In the UK, use the official balance page and enter the card number, which returns the balance, your transaction history and the expiry date.

Other European markets run their own checkers on their own domains, and the UK page will tell you as much if your card was issued elsewhere.

In the US, Decathlon does not operate a self-service balance page, so you contact customer service through decathlon.com or ask an associate in a store. Whichever route you use, the expiry date matters as much as the number on a European card.

In store, hand it over at the till and the value comes off your total. Online, enter the card number and PIN at the payment step on the website matching the card's country.

It covers goods across the range, though there are exclusions worth knowing: cards cannot be used to buy other gift cards or vouchers, cannot be used on business accounts, and on some cards Marketplace products sold by third-party sellers are excluded, with only Decathlon's own products eligible. In the US, used and refurbished products and test-and-buy programmes are also excluded.

It depends where the card came from, and the difference is stark. UK cards are valid for twenty-four calendar months from issuance or activation, or until the balance hits zero, whichever comes first, and any remaining balance is lost at expiry with no recovery.

US cards, by contrast, never expire. If you are holding a European card, treat the expiry date as the real deadline on the asset, because an expired balance is simply gone.

The number and PIN together are the value, and Decathlon does not replace a lost or stolen card, so never release both before a rate is agreed in writing. Two brand-specific points.

First, check the expiry yourself before you trade, because a card that expires next week is not worth what a fresh one is and a buyer who does not mention it is either careless or hoping you will not notice.

Second, be aware that Decathlon's US terms state gift cards may not be resold and that cards bought through unauthorised resellers or internet auction sites are not guaranteed by Decathlon. That is a real risk to whoever ends up holding the card.

Speed depends on region. A UK card verifies quickly because the balance and expiry read instantly on Decathlon's own page.
