Last month a user sent us a simple message. "I have a $1000 Blackbird gift card. What is the rate?"
We had never heard of it. That is not unusual on its own. New card brands appear all the time, and part of our job is learning them before anyone else does, so we treated it as an opportunity. We went looking for the parent brand. What business does Blackbird run? What do they sell? Where do you spend the card?
We searched Google. We searched YouTube. We searched the major shopping platforms and the gift card marketplaces. The only Blackbird that surfaced was a restaurant brand in the United Kingdom with no gift card programme and no connection whatsoever to anything called a Blackbird gift card.
So we told that user the honest thing. Sorry, we cannot find anywhere to redeem a Blackbird gift card. We also made a note to look again later, because one message is not a pattern.
Two weeks later it was a pattern. One hundred people had messaged us about Blackbird gift cards.
One hundred messages, all asking the same thing
The questions arrived from different people, on different days, in different phrasings, and they were remarkably consistent.
How can I check my Blackbird gift card balance? How do I redeem my Blackbird gift card? Do you buy Blackbird gift cards? I have a $100 Blackbird gift card, what is your rate? What is the minimum Blackbird gift card you accept? Do you buy $500 Blackbird cards?
At first this looked like an opportunity. One hundred people in two weeks holding a card nobody was buying is exactly the kind of gap a trading platform wants to fill. If we could work out how these cards were redeemed, we could serve a market before anyone else reached it.
So we asked every person who contacted us to send photos. Cards, receipts, order confirmations, emails, anything they had. That is when the picture changed completely.
The cards did not match each other
The first thing we noticed is that there is no single Blackbird gift card. There are many, and they disagree with one another.
One card is black with a white bird in flight, marked $1000 VALUE, with a card number, a card code, a QR code, an expiry of 12/2030, and the line "REDEEM AT T.ME/BLACKBIRDCHANN9" printed along the bottom.
Another card, also black, also with a bird, is marked $2000 VALUE, also expires 12/2030, but tells the holder to redeem at www.cardtrxchange.com instead. Different destinations. Different birds. Same brand name.
A third version arrives as retail packaging with a purple Blackbird logo and a hanging tab, the kind you would see on a shop rack. Its instructions say to use the card at any Walmart store or trade it only on Telegram at t.me/blackbirdsupport11.
That is three Blackbird products with three different redemption destinations. Real gift card brands do not do this. Amazon does not send some customers to amazon.com and others to a messaging app. A single issuer has a single redemption path, because the issuer is the one holding your money and they need you to reach them.
Then we counted the Telegram handles across everything people had sent us. We found @Blackbird7285, t.me/blackbirdchann9, t.me/blackbirdsupport11, @BlackBirdChannel54 and t.me/BLACKBIRSCHANNEL. Five separate channels, all claiming to be official support for the same brand. This is what a group of people running separate operations under a shared brand name looks like. It is not what a company looks like.

The Best Buy receipt that was printed on six different days
Several people sent us the same Best Buy receipt. Not similar receipts. The same one.
Every copy shows Best Buy store #478 at 5001 Northern Boulevard, Long Island City, New York. Every copy carries the identical validation string, 1000000-274302-316913- 452736-070628-74879. Every copy shows the same register sequence, 0478 003 9042, and the same transaction time, 16:23.
The dates are different.
One copy is dated 14/06/2026. Another is dated 06/27/2026. Two identical transactions, down to the second, on two different days. That is not possible. Someone is editing one image file and redistributing it.
Look at the date formats while you are there. American receipts print month first. 06/27/2026 fits. 14/06/2026 does not, because there is no fourteenth month. Whoever built this template was working in a day first format and did not think about where the receipt was supposed to have been printed.
The contradictions continue inside the receipt. One version lists the line item "Blackbird GIFT" at 1000.00. Another version of the same receipt lists it at 100.00, while still showing "Blackbird GIFT CARD $1,000.00" on the next line. The receipt disagrees with itself about what was sold.
There is a line reading "unpaid recharge code - $36.78" which corresponds to nothing in retail. There is a line for Chex Mix at $3.19 in an electronics store. And at the bottom, beneath a large black bird graphic, the receipt instructs the customer to trade or redeem their Blackbird via Telegram. On some copies the handle is @Blackbird7285. On others it is t.me/blackbirdchann9.
Stop and think about what that means. A cash register at a Best Buy branch in New York, printing a bird logo and a Telegram username at the bottom of a customer receipt. Retail point of sale systems print store details, line items, tax, payment method and return policy. They do not print third party brand artwork or social media handles. The receipt is not a receipt. It is an image made to look like one.
And the simplest fact of all sits underneath everything above. Best Buy does not sell a Blackbird gift card. You can check their gift card range yourself in any store or on their website.

The Walmart receipt that charged tax on a gift card
The Walmart receipts have the same problem and one extra tell that settles the matter immediately.
Two receipts show Walmart store #5874 in Portland, Oregon, transaction number 8876, cashier 01473, terminal B23, at 02:47 PM, for a $1,300 Blackbird gift card paid in cash. One is dated 14/07/2026. The other is dated 22/07/2026. Same transaction number, same cashier, same minute, eight days apart.
Now look at the tax line. The first receipt charges $9.29 in tax. The second charges $9.22 on the identical $1,300 subtotal. Two different tax amounts for the same purchase in the same state.
But the real giveaway is that there is no tax at all. Gift cards are not taxed when you buy them in the United States. A gift card is not a product, it is stored value, and sales tax applies later when the recipient actually buys something with it. Every genuine Walmart gift card receipt shows zero tax on the gift card line. A receipt that charges sales tax on a gift card purchase was written by someone who has never looked closely at a real one.
Two more details finish it off. The store phone number reads (503) 555-0174. The 555 prefix is the reserved fictional range used in films and television precisely so that nobody calls a real person. And the return policy line says items must be returned within nine days, where Walmart's actual policy runs to ninety. Someone dropped a digit.
We already documented in our guide to spotting fake Walmart gift cards that genuine Walmart gift cards stop at a $500 maximum. A $1,300 Walmart Blackbird card fails on that ground alone, before you reach the tax, the phone number or the duplicated transaction.

The seller who admits it is not a gift card
This is the part that ends the debate, and it comes from the sellers themselves.
Several buyers sent us their order confirmations from a site called livecards.net. The product listed is "1x BlackBird $1000 (Global)" or "1x BlackBird 1000 GBP (Global)", marked Delivered, with a code to copy.
Directly underneath, in a boxed note on the confirmation page, the site states plainly that this is an information recharge code exchange, paid upfront, and not a regular gift card.
That sentence is printed by the people taking the money. They are telling every buyer, in writing, that what they purchased is not a gift card. Then the same page instructs the buyer to visit an official Telegram channel to redeem it.
The same confirmation page carries a further oddity. A product presented as being worth $1000 shows a recharge code value of $25.77. And the same order reference, BlackBird 1000 GBP 000546, appears on screenshots sent to us by different people, which means the confirmation page is being reused rather than generated per customer.
There is also a typo repeated across every version of that disclaimer. It reads "not a regular git card", missing the f. One template, copied everywhere, error and all.
Anyone searching for whether livecards.net is legitimate should read that boxed note carefully. It is the clearest statement in this entire investigation, and it is on the seller's own page.

The receipt that labelled itself fictional
Of everything we were sent, one item stands out.
A user forwarded an email receipt for a $510 digital gift card purchased through something called the Blackbird App. The layout is convincing. Item description, face value, payment summary, subtotal, taxes, discounts, total charge, payment method, purchaser name, redemption code.
Then read the actual words.
Store or merchant is given as "Generic Retail Store (fictional)". The purchaser's name is given as "Lenart Joe (fictional)". The card reference ends "3131 (fictional)".
The word fictional appears three times, in brackets, printed inside the receipt.
That is what happens when someone asks an AI tool to generate a sample purchase receipt and the tool politely labels its own invented placeholder data. The person distributing it never read what they were sending. The receipt is telling you, in plain English, that its contents were made up.
At the bottom sits the instruction we now expect. Please use this card on the Blackbird channel only. If used on other apps or platforms it will not work.
Of course it will not. There is nothing on the other side.

How to redeem a Blackbird gift card
This question brings most people to this article, so here is the direct answer.
You cannot redeem a Blackbird gift card, because there is no merchant behind it. There is no Blackbird website, no Blackbird shop, no checkout anywhere that accepts a Blackbird card, and no issuer holding a balance against your card number. Walmart does not accept it, whatever the packaging claims. Best Buy does not sell it, whatever the receipt claims.
The only redemption paths ever offered are Telegram channels and one unfamiliar website, cardtrxchange.com. Those are not redemption paths. A Telegram handle is a person, and the person on the other end typically asks for a verification fee, an activation payment, your own genuine card details, or your bank information. That request is the entire purpose of the exercise.
How to check a Blackbird gift card balance
You cannot do this either, for the same reason.
Every genuine gift card brand publishes a balance page on its own website and prints a customer service number on the card. Walmart has one, at 1-888-537-5503. Circle K has one. Every real brand has one, because they need cardholders to be able to reach them.
Blackbird has no website, no balance checker and no support number. What it has instead is a set of Telegram usernames, which is not the same thing at all. Anyone offering to check your balance through Telegram is collecting your card details, not checking anything.
Can I sell a Blackbird gift card or convert it to naira
No, and we want to be completely straight about why, because this is where the loss lands.
A gift card is worth money for exactly one reason. Somewhere, a merchant is holding a balance against that card number and will honour it at checkout. That single fact is what every naira paid for a gift card in Nigeria traces back to. When we buy a genuine card, we can pay you because the balance is real and the card can be spent for goods worth that amount.
A Blackbird card has no balance anywhere, because there is no merchant. It is not a discounted card, or a difficult card, or a card that needs a special channel. It is a picture of a card. Any platform that verifies balances before paying, as we do, will detect this in seconds, which is why no legitimate buyer in Nigeria or anywhere else will pay for one at any rate.
If someone in a trading group offers to buy your Blackbird card, treat that offer as part of the same operation. The pattern is consistent. They ask for the code first and vanish, or they send a fake payment screenshot, or they charge a processing fee for a sale that never completes.
What to do if you already have one
If you paid money for a Blackbird card, stop spending immediately. Do not pay an activation fee, a verification fee, an unlocking fee or a channel membership fee. There is nothing behind any of those payments. The cheapest moment to walk away is right now.
If you paid through a traceable method, contact your payment provider and open a dispute while the transaction is recent. If you bought through a group or a marketplace, report the seller there and post what happened, because the people who bought after you are still deciding what to do.
If someone gave you a Blackbird card as a gift, they were almost certainly scammed themselves when they bought it, and telling them gently is the kind thing to do. If you received one as payment for work, you have not been paid. Go back and request a real payment method, and treat any refusal as your answer.
The sixty second check that would have caught this
Blackbird is the third fabricated card brand we have documented this year, after Yuncard and the fake Walmart variants. The names change every few months. The tells do not.
Search the brand name plus the words gift card. A real brand puts an official site with a redemption page in the first few results. If the only results are trading groups and people asking whether it is real, that silence is the answer.
Find the official balance checker. No balance page on the brand's own domain means no card.
Read the redemption instruction printed on the card. If it points to Telegram, WhatsApp or any messaging app, stop there. This one test alone would have protected every person who messaged us.
Check whether the claimed retailer actually accepts it. If a card says it works at Walmart, look at Walmart's own gift card page. If Walmart does not mention the brand, Walmart does not accept it.
Look for tax on a gift card receipt. In the United States gift cards are not taxed at purchase. Tax on the gift card line means the receipt is fabricated.
Compare copies if more than one is circulating. Identical transaction numbers with different dates, or identical subtotals with different tax, mean one image is being edited and passed around.
Read the seller's own fine print. In this case it said, in writing, that the product is not a regular gift card. People skipped that line because they wanted the card to be real.
What this really tells us
The uncomfortable part of the Blackbird story is not that one fake brand exists. It is how cheap the whole package has become to produce.
Whoever is running this generated card designs, retail packaging, a Best Buy receipt, a Walmart receipt, an order confirmation page and an email receipt, and pushed them all out under one name. A few years ago that would have taken a designer, a printer and real effort. Now it takes an afternoon and a few prompts, which is exactly why one of the receipts still had the word fictional printed inside it.
So the old instinct of trusting a card because it looks convincing no longer works. Looking real is the cheapest thing in this market now. What still works is verification against the issuer, and an issuer you cannot find anywhere is an issuer that does not exist.
That is why we verify every card before we pay, and why we confirm your rate with you before anything changes hands. It protects you more than it protects us.

Frequently asked questions
Is Blackbird a real gift card brand?
We found no evidence that it is. There is no official Blackbird website, no merchant that accepts the card, no balance checker and no customer support number. The only Blackbird we could verify is an unrelated restaurant brand in the United Kingdom with no gift card programme.
How do I redeem a Blackbird gift card?
You cannot. Every version of the card directs holders to a Telegram channel or to an unfamiliar site rather than to a merchant. No shop, online or physical, accepts Blackbird cards.
How do I check my Blackbird gift card balance?
There is no way to check it. Blackbird has no official website with a balance page and no support line. Anyone offering to check it for you through Telegram is collecting your card details.
Does Walmart accept Blackbird gift cards?
No. Some Blackbird packaging claims Walmart acceptance, but Walmart has no relationship with the brand and does not accept it. The Walmart receipts circulating alongside these cards contain sales tax on a gift card purchase, which never happens on a genuine receipt.
Does Best Buy sell Blackbird gift cards?
No. The Best Buy receipts in circulation are copies of one image with the dates changed, and they carry a Telegram handle printed at the bottom, which no retail receipt does.
Can I sell a Blackbird gift card in Nigeria or convert it to naira?
No. No legitimate buyer can pay for a card that cannot be verified against an issuer, because there is no balance to buy. Offers to purchase them, particularly through Telegram, come from the same operation that produces them.
Is livecards.net legitimate?
Their own order confirmation page states that what they sell is an information recharge code exchange, paid upfront, and not a regular gift card, and then directs buyers to redeem through a Telegram channel. Read that notice carefully before buying anything there.
What should I do if I already paid for a Blackbird card?
Stop making further payments, especially any activation or verification fee. Open a dispute with your payment provider if the method was traceable, report the seller wherever the deal happened, and warn the group so other people do not repeat it.
