Call 1-800-992-9010 with the card in hand. You can also use live chat on talbots.com, which is often faster than waiting on hold. If you're in the US or Canada, any Talbots, Talbots Outlet or Clearance store can check it at the register.

Three routes, and the details differ by card type.

Online at talbots.com: at checkout, click "Apply Gift Card." For an e-Gift, enter the ten-digit code and the recipient email it was sent to. For a plastic card or merchandise credit, enter the number from the back.

In a store: hand the card to a sales associate at the till. An e-Gift has to be printed out first. Talbots' own instruction, not a suggestion.

By phone: call 1-800-TALBOTS (1-800-825-2687) and give your personal shopper the number and the dollar amount.

Note: If your e-Gift is worth more than your purchase, Talbots issues a Merchandise Credit for the difference rather than leaving a balance on the e-Gift. A plastic card behaves normally and keeps the remainder on the card.

Never send a card number or e-Gift code before a rate is agreed and confirmed. Talbots cards are spendable by whoever holds the number, and Talbots will not reissue a card once the value is gone.

There's a Talbots-specific risk on top of that. Because the brand's own site has no public balance checker, a whole industry of unofficial "Talbots balance check" pages has grown up around the gap, several publishing phone numbers and URLs that don't appear anywhere on talbots.com. Entering your card number and PIN into one of those is handing it over. Verify through talbots.com or the customer service line, nowhere else.

And treat an unusually generous rate as a warning rather than an opportunity. On a specialty apparel card, an outlier quote is almost always someone planning not to pay.

Ask three questions of every quote.

Does this rate apply to my card type?

Some platforms treat an e-Gift, a plastic card and a merchandise credit identically; others don't, and the merchandise credit is usually the one that gets discounted quietly.

Is the rate locked when I accept, or can it move before payment?

And is anything deducted after the quote, like a verification fee, a processing charge, a minimum threshold?

Then compare the Naira figure that will actually reach your account. On a lower-volume brand like Talbots the honest spread between platforms is fairly tight, so a quote that's far above the others is usually a quote that won't survive contact with verification.

No. Talbots stores are in the US and Canada, talbots.com ships within those markets, and the card is store credit rather than a payment card. There's no Nigerian retailer, no local site and no conversion path that lets you spend it here.

Talbots does accept international orders shipped abroad, but you'd be paying international shipping and customs on womenswear, which rarely makes financial sense against simply selling the card.

That's the honest case for trading it. A card you can't spend is worth nothing to you and something real to a buyer in Boston, and the trade closes that gap.

Talbots says e-Gift Cards are delivered to an email address within hours of purchase. In practice most land within minutes.

Physical gift cards arrive by mail, with no standard shipping charge, and Talbots quotes 4 to 8 business days after the shipping date for standard delivery inside the continental US.

If an e-Gift hasn't turned up, check spam first, then have the purchaser contact Talbots on 1-800-992-9010. They'll discuss the order with the person who paid rather than the person waiting.

Talbots states plainly that its gift cards are not returnable and cannot be redeemed or exchanged for cash or cheque unless required by law. They also can't be used to pay down a Talbots Credit Card balance.

Note: Talbots will not refund or reissue gift cards purchased from third parties. If a card bought on a marketplace turns out to be empty or invalid, Talbots is not the remedy, the marketplace is, if it has buyer protection at all.

No. There's no purchase fee, no maintenance or dormancy fee on the balance, and no expiry on the funds. Physical cards ship free.

Two related costs that aren't gift card fees but do come up. Online returns using Talbots' prepaid USPS label carry a $9.95 shipping and processing deduction from the refund. And the Talbots Credit Card is a completely separate product from the gift card, issued by Comenity Bank — has its own terms. Don't confuse the two.

On resale, the cost is the discount to face value, disclosed before you trade rather than deducted after.
