Trading Gift Cards From a Deceased Relative: What You Need to Know

Receiving gift cards as part of an inheritance is more common than you'd think. Here's how to handle them and get the best payout.

We regularly help clients trade gift cards that were found in the belongings of a deceased relative — often US-based family members who had unused cards. Here's what you need to know.

Most Cards Don't Expire

US law (the CARD Act of 2009) prohibits gift card expiration for 5 years from purchase. Most major brands (Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Visa) have no expiration date at all. Age of the card is rarely an issue.

Check the Balance First

Old cards may have been partially used. Always check the balance before trading. The process is the same: call the number on the card back, or check online.

Physical Cards That Are Worn

If the card is scratched and the code is hard to read, take a high-resolution photo in good lighting. We can often work with partially obscured codes as long as enough digits are visible.

We're Discreet and Respectful

We understand this can be a sensitive situation. Our WhatsApp communication is private, and we handle all trades with discretion. Just let us know the context and we'll guide you through it.
