Sign in to your Spotify account and enter the code.

Three things have to be true or it won't work.

1. Your account's country setting must match the country the card was bought in.
2. You must be on Premium Individual, or on the free tier. Student, Duo, Family and Basic plans can't take a gift card, so you'd need to switch to Individual first.
3. And the card must be within twelve months of its purchase date.

If you bought it in a shop, the cashier has to have activated it at the till. An unactivated card fails redemption and looks identical to a used one.

The time is added from your next payment date, or immediately if you're upgrading from free. You can hold a maximum of 18 months of Premium time on an account.

Spotify has stopped selling gift cards, but previously purchased cards can still be redeemed.

If someone already purchased a physical card before the discontinuation, they should check whether it is still valid and redeemable.

Also, be careful with third-party sellers. Spotify's U.S. card terms say cards obtained from unauthorized sellers or resellers may not be honored.

If your Spotify gift card isn't working, there are several things to check.

Check the code

Make sure every character has been entered correctly. Spotify specifically warns that characters can be confused, such as a zero and capital "O" or a capital "I" and the number "1."

Check your country

Your Spotify account's country or region must match the country where the gift card was purchased. A mismatch can prevent redemption.

Check activation

If it was purchased from a physical retail store, the cashier needed to activate the card at the time of purchase. An unactivated card may not work.

Check your Premium plan

Spotify gift cards are intended for Premium Individual. They cannot be applied to plans such as Premium Student, Premium Family, Premium Duo, or certain trial offers.

Don't repeatedly enter the code

Spotify says that after four unsuccessful attempts, an error can appear and you may need to wait 24 hours before trying again.

If none of these solves the problem, contact Spotify Support and keep your purchase information available.

For a legitimate, properly activated gift card, you normally redeem the code through your Spotify account rather than submitting a receipt as part of the standard redemption process.

Spotify's instructions are:

1. Log into your Spotify account.
2. Go to the gift-card redemption page.
3. Enter the code.
4. Select Continue.
5. Select Redeem.

The timing depends on your account.

If you're already subscribed to Premium Individual, the gift card starts applying on your next payment date.

If you're upgrading from a free account, it can take effect immediately.

There is an important exception involving suspected fraud. Spotify says it may require proof of account ownership or purchase/payment details when dealing with disabled accounts or suspected fraudulent activity.

So you don't normally need to provide a receipt simply to redeem a legitimate card, but keep your receipt or proof of purchase, especially if there is a problem with the card.

A Spotify gift card does not work like a general-purpose $10 payment card that simply leaves a $1.99 balance to pay for the month.

The critical question is where they live. A card only works on an account registered in the country where the card was bought, so buying a US card for a friend in Nigeria doesn't work, and buying a Nigerian card for a friend in the UK doesn't either.

If you want to give Premium to someone in another country, the reliable route is to pay for a subscription on their own account rather than sending a card across borders. It's less ceremonious than a gift card, but it actually works.
